Title sequence analysis

Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging

The theme of this film centres around a 14-year-old girl who keeps a diary about the ups and downs of being a teenager, including the things she learns about kissing. Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging' is aimed in particular at 12-16 year olds (although it's themes will appeal to females of all ages). The film has received a "PG-13" rating for suggestive content involving young teens and language, even though the language isn't very strong. With the respect to the genre this would be a comedy, drama and romance film. It had release date of the 25th July 2008 (UK). The setting of the film is in Brighton At the start of the movie, it show the production adverts. these adverts are Paramount pictures and Nickelodeon movies. Shown as written in order, Paramount Pictures appear first. this manufacture presents the logo which starts off with a somewhat indistinct charcoal mountain ringed with stars. the logo originally had twenty- four stars as tributes to the then current system of contracts for actors, as Paramount only had 24 signed at the time. The Nickelodeon Movies is shown as a orange paint splat with the name Nickelodeon in the middle which is in white and the movies title next to it which is in orange like the splat. this is shown that it is a teen movie because paint is like a childish thing to do. In the first 2 minutes of the scene, there is only a existence of narrative that explain what goes on in the movie, it shows almost all the characters that presented throughout the movie. When Jas and Georgia are back in school, Georgia is like a narrator but saying it in all in her head, she introduces all the characters and what they are like.

In the first scene, it shows a little bit of the story but not as much. It goes into more detail throughout the film. With this scene it shows use what the characters do in their daily lifestyle day and what they have to handle with being a teenager and all. It shows the Georgia tries to act like an adult by doing things that children can't do, plucking her eyebrows but sadly messes up. She also says that she is trying to become a mature adult. the amount of settings that are established in the first 2 minutes is:

  • House - outside: kitchen and Georgias room
  • Street
  • Party
  • Town
  • School - inside and outside
  • School field
The characters that are shown in the first 2 minutes is Georgia who is the main character, then Georgias mom and dad, her best friends Jas, Ellen and Rosie. When Georgia and Jas go back to school, Georgia introduces everyone she knows so we get to know who they are later on in the movie. These people are Dave the Laugh who Georgia uses to make the boy she likes jealous who his close friend, The bummer twins who we only see a little bit in the film, Lindsey who is the enemy of Georgia and her friends. The enigmas that are created in the film is that you never find out is what happens to Lindsey and where they went to school. This effects the audience because it makes them want to have a sequel.

The sort of group that is shown in the opening is a group of teenagers who try and act like adults but don't succeed, when georgia goes go to the party and didn't one second care about what people thought of her until Lindsey says a comment about her costumes to make her feel embarrassed about herself. Lindsey is one of those girls that you call the plastic, she acts like one of those girls who make comments about someone else who doesn't have much confidence in their self and is like a queen bee. this sort of group shows the way that teenagers actually act in real life to each other.

The opening scene begins with the main character, Georgia walking down the street with her dad (medium close up) driving very close to her talking through the window. she is just happily walking down the road being proud of her olive suit (long shot). she arrives at the fancy dress which where her whole year has planned and has to face the humiliation of being the only one dressed as a food. she storms over to her friends, demand why they aren't wearing costumes like her as they agreed to (three person shot), then they make up so many excuses to try and not get into trouble but Georgia wasn't having any of it and runs out of the place, knocking over drinks and plates of biscuits and people along the way. she then goes running through the streets (extreme long shot but also is a tracking shot of her running through the street), still dressed as a stuffed olive. after arriving at home and throwing the biggest tantrum which involves stomping on her costume, ripping all of her photos off the walls and throwing all her teddy bears on the floor. it turns to the first day back of school and Georgia and her family are having breakfast all together at the table (medium close up), Georgia takes a deep breathe and announces to the family that she is going to be 'more mature from now on'. at school that day, suddenly Georgia and her three school mates are all best friends again and during their break, they are all sat together (long shot)  talking about what girls gossip about, BOYS! Then the scene cuts there. At the start of the scene, you cant really see Georgia's face so it is a mystery to know who plays the main character. I think this part of the film attracts the audience by showing what happens in a teenagers life inside and outside of school. This film will attract teenager girls mainly due to the fact that the main character is played by a young female.

In this scene, they have a mixture of diegetic and non diegetic sounds. The non diegetic sound in the sequence are the music. The music at the start of the scene is an up beat instrumental sound where its got no lyrics to it, i think they use this to make it more dramatic or funny. But then when Georgia is running down the straight, they use a scouting for girls song that describes Georgia in the lyrics. The music dies down when a next scenery shows and goes back to the up beat instrumental sound. With all the music you can still he the diegetic sounds. The diegetic sounds in the sequence was the sound of the environment around her like cars and birds and also dialogue. There is quite a lot of dialogue between all the characters in the first couple of minutes of this film. When the scenery changes and Georgia is in her room getting ready for the first day back at school, she is plucking her eyebrows which make too long to do so she decides to shave them with a razor and when her sister Libby knocks her arm, you can hear the sound of the razor slicing half of her eyebrow off very loudly.  For the editing for this scene, there is a fade to black when the scenes change. There is a series of shot/reverse shot during the discussion at the dinner table before school. also as view directly over head of Georgia running and entering school.

The titles follow the same colour pallet - white. The text of all the main titles are positioned on the screen where there is no characters (main) are. this makes the words stand out more than the scenery. The names are big but the roles like producers are sampler and positioned on either the top or the bottom of the real names. the job titles that are shown in the first 2 minutes are:

  • Casting crew
  • Producers
  • Screen play
  • Edit crew
  • Production designer
  • Music supervisors
  • Co-producers
  • Executive producer
  • Costume designer
  • Director of photography
  • Director
  • Music

The Shallows.

the theme of this film centres around a surfer named Nancy who was attacked by a great white shark 200 yards from the shore, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills. The Shallows is aimed in particular at 20-40 years olds. the film has received a PG-13 rating for bloody images, intense sequences of peril and brief strong language. With the respect of the genre this would be a drama, comedy and thriller movie. it had a release date of the 12th august 2016. the setting of the film was filmed different places like the Village Roadshow Studios, Oxenford, Queensland, Australia. At the start of the scene it shows the two main productions adverts. These adverts are Sony Pictures Television and Columbia Pictures. First comes Sony Pictures, Sony Pictures Television (SPT) the American  television production/distribution studio that operates internationally. The way it is set on the screen is that it fades into the word ‘Sony’, but it fades from the letter ‘O’ outwards. On the ‘O’ it has a light the shines throw then the word gets big and then changes in the next production which is Columbia Pictures. Columbia Pictures (formly known as Columbia Pictures corporation and CBC film sales corporation) is an american production and distribution studio of the Sony pictures group, a division of Sony entertainments Sony Pictures entertainment, a subsidiary of the Japanese conglomerate Sony. the way that it is shown of the screen is a women who is quite young stood like the a statue which looks like the statue of liberty. The way she is standing makes her look strong and powerful.

in the first scene, it shows a bit of the story like why she has gone to the beach and the whole meaning about it. From the first ever clip of the little boy on the beach playing football nicely with his football, he spots the helmet that the man who is shown a bit more further into the movie floating around. As he picks up the helmet, you can notice there is a shark bite craved into it. The go-pro on top of the helmet grabs his attention, he quickly watches the video that was recorded minutes before the little boy appears and as soon as he watches it he runs away to show anyone he can find for help. The video shows the devastating moment when the man gets eaten by the great white shark lurking around the beaches shore line. this whole scene is a flashback, flashbacks are used to recount an event that happened before the whole film starts. Then it fades to black and shows a normal style of font of the title 'The Shallows'. After this it goes to a happy scene of a nice sunny day with the main character, Nancy, going through photos on her phone of her mother when she was Nancy's age at the beach she is trying to find with the man who speaks Spanish. The amount of settings that are established in the first 2 minutes:

  • Beach
  • Car
The characters that are shown in the first 2 minutes is Nancy who is the main character, then the little boy at the beach, the guys who was at the beach surfing but got killed, and the man who is the driver for Nancy. The shallows doesn't have many characters in it, unlike most films. it has Nancy, the two men at the beach, the little boy and the driver. i think this is because they don't want the film to crowded. Nancy travelled to Mexico to find the elusive beach that she sees in a photograph of her mother but the beach had no name, it was private and no one knew about it, this is the enigmas that was created in the movie.

The opening scene starts off with a boy who is aged about 9 is at the beach shore line playing nicely with his football when he comes across at helmet floating in the water. he notices a go pro on top of the suspicious helmet, he scans the video that is on the go-pro and sees the man in the water having the time of his life but then gets ripped apart by a shark, in the background the camera man gets the broken surf board. Soon as he notices the video he quickly runs off to show anyone he can find. When the video is played you see a little snippet of the main character who is played by Blake Lively. The scene slowly fades to black and the title appears 'THE SHALLOWS'. Then fades from black to white to a more happier scene of the truck travelling through the rainforest to get to the private beach, it shows Blake who plays Nancy in the movie flipping through photos of a young lady at the beach. Then the scene finishes.

In this scene, there is more diegetic sounds than non diegetic. The non diegetic sounds in the sequence is the two different kind of music. The music at the start of the scene is a thriller orchestra playing all sorts of instruments where there is no lyrics, they use this to make it all dramatic and scary. They also use this to show that something bad will happen throughout the movie by showing the little bits of what happened like the place where it happened, the surf board and then the helmet with the camera on. This sets the scene with the music to make it all gloomy and miserable with the weather too. The music get louder and dramatic when the title appears. The music dies down when the scenery changes and changes to a more happier song, which plays at first then when we get inside of the truck it plays out of the radio. This also sets the scene with the nice weather and mood. The diegetic sounds in the sequence was the sound of the environment around the characters like waves crashing against the rocks and shore, seagulls, truck noise and etc, with a lot of dialogue. There is quite a lot of dialogue but mainly of Nancy chatting about anything she can possibly think of. When the scenery changes to the truck, you can hear the detail of the phone wen she slides the photos across, and the truck moving. For the editing this scene, there is a lot of fade to blacks but the fades to white as well. There is a series of shot/reverse shot during the discussion in the car. And also a point of view shot of her looking at the photos.

For the titles of this scene, there is only the production name which is the Columbia pictures presents .... the movie but unlike other movies there is no main characters names shown and also no producers or directors. The name of the movie appears half way throughout the scene but as normal kind of font which is sans serif. They don't really show any other titles because in my opinion it makes the screen messy and it is better show it at the end of the film with the credits.

Suicide squad.

The plot summary of this particular film is when a secret government agency recruits some of the most dangerous incarcerated super-villians to form a defensive task force. Their first mission: save the world from the apocalypse. Suicide squad is aimed in particular at 16-25 year olds . The film has received a "PG-13" rating for sequence of violence and action throughout, disturbing behaviour, suggestive content and language. With the respect of the genre this would be an action, adventure, fantasy and sci-fi movie. It had a release date of the 5th August 2016. The settings of this movie were filmed in Toronto, Ontario and Canada.  The production companies of this film are Warner Brothers Pictures (WBP) and DC Comics. Both of the production movies have a theme of the suicide squad with the colours and the broken things.  Warner Bros. Entertainment INC. is an American entertainment company owned by time warner, headquartered in burbank California. Warner bros. is a member of the motion picture association of American. The name on the logo which says "warner bros. entertainment"  has a flickered lighting which is used to fit in with the theme. It gets bigger when it gets the lights turn off but you can still notice it. Then slowly disappears into the DC Comics. DC Comics, INC. is an American comic book publisher it is the publishing unit of DC entertainment, s subsidiary of warner brothers, a division of time warner. DC comics is one of the largest, oldest and most successful companies operating in American comic books and producers material featuring numerous well known heroic characters. Then way it is set is the exact same to the Warner Brothers.

In the first scene, it describes a bit of the story like who they are due to Amanda Wallar who introduces the criminals individually. When she introduces the criminals, there are flashbacks of before they got all crazy and become a criminals. The characters that are introduces in the first two minutes of this movie are Floyd AKA Dead-shot who is one of the main criminals in the film, then it shows Harley Quinn who is also one of the main Criminals who is in love with the Joker. Then the guy who looks after them all but treats them horribly and assaulting them on purpose. In the end of the first scene, it comes to Amanda Wallar who is in charge of this whole entire thing of getting them all together and save the world.

The settings that are shown in the first 2 minutes are:

  • Institution Camp - inside and outside
  • Camera room
  • Cell room - Floyd and Harley Quinn
  • Washington DC
  • Restaurant
The scene starts of with the institution camp where it shows that all the criminals live and are all kept some where safe where they can't harm or kill anyone anymore. it jumps from scene to scene of Harley Quinn and Floyd in their own cells and describes themselves and who they are, as Grigg introduces them. The group that is shown in the opening scene are a lot of criminals who have their own stories why they are bad, which they try and do something good for the world with bumps and lumps on the way. It also shows what life is like to be a criminal and how they get treated for the way they have acted before they get caught. in the place they are kept secretive, it shows the punishments that the criminals get which presents to the society that one slip up will give you karma. With the editing in this scene there is a lot of switching to different scenery's. There is also some kind of over the shoulder reverse shot between Floyd and Griggs when they are talking through the door of Floyd's 'cell'.

In this scene, there is a mixture between the diegetic and non diegetic sounds. The non diegetic sounds are the music, there music starts when the production companies show first of all and it some sort of action and scary music. The music still plays but there is a different kind of scary music fades a little when it shows the set and the main characters are shown. Harley Quinn has her own song to describe who she is which is 'You don't own me". She is shown to be sexualised by the way she acts and the clothes she wears. The titles that are shown in the first part are very little, when the camp on the outside is shown there is a little bit of typography shown.
